Herbivorous Vs Carnivorous
Herbivores:
1. Their tongues are shaped sharply and cylindrically, so that they can manipulate the grass, and plant parts easily. So, they cannot lap up water leisurely.
2. When an animal is drinking water with its neck bent in an awkward position (like the impalas and giraffes), it is most vulnerable to predatory attacks than when with the head raised. So, they need to drink maximum water in minimum time, which is why sucking water is the most efficient way.
3. Most of the water required by the herbivores is provided by the food itself. Certain antelopes, Koalas, Pandas do not require to drink water at all.
Carnivores:
1. The shape of the tongues are flat rather than cylindrical enabling them to strip flesh by just licking (and the tongues are also like sandpaper). It is estimated that by just licking, a panther can empty out 40% of the meal. So, they need to lap up the water, than sucking in.
2. Most of the carnivores do not have to fear about other predators (either due to size as in lions and tigers, or due to the packs - like in hyenas and wild dogs). So, they have the luxury to leisurely lap up the water.
3. They eat flesh, which offers lesser amount of water, but require more water for digestion. Thus, they need more water.
